The Secretary General, Wang Hongsong, gave a brief introduction about the BAC in respect of acceptance and hearing of cases, the arbitrators, and new progress in development of mediation services. Mrs. Wang gave high praise to the Kuala Lumpur Regional Centre for Arbitration for its successful organization of the 2011 Annual Conference of Asia-pacific Regional Arbitration Panels; she stressed that the organizational capability and international level demonstrated by the Kuala Lumpur Regional Centre for Arbitration greatly impressed the attendants.
Mr. Tan Sri James Foong, the Lord Chancellor, lauded the achievements made by the BAC. According to Mr. Tan Sri James Foong, the 5th China-ASEAN Top Forum on Legal Cooperation and Development will be jointly held in September this year by Bar Council Malaysia, China Law Society, ASEAN Law Association and Kuala Lumpur Regional Centre for Arbitration. This Forum will aim to strengthen the exchange and cooperation between legal communities and legal professionals in Malaysia and China. He hopes that the BAC will send its delegates to the Forum. Sundra Rajoo, director of Kuala Lumpur Regional Centre for Arbitration, briefly introduced the Kuala Lumpur Regional Centre for Arbitration. He said the Centre was established in 1978 and the arbitration rules of the Centre are based on Arbitration Rules of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law. According to Mr. Sundra Rajoo, the Centre gives high priority to the training of mediators, and once invited professors from the Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution at Pepperdine University School of Law to provide training for its mediators. The Centre will soon have a new office space that will suitably serve internationally well-known arbitration agencies that develop business in Malaysia. In view of the ever closer economic exchange between China and Malaysia and China’s continuously increasing investment in Malaysia, Mr. Sundra Rajoo expressed his hope that the BAC will expand its business in Kuala Lumpur, and that the Kuala Lumpur Regional Centre for Arbitration is willing to establish a long-term cooperative relationship with the BAC. Mr. Sundra Rajoo added that the Kuala Lumpur Regional Centre for Arbitration will work to facilitate the cooperation.
The two sides had extensive discussion on specific issues concerning the cooperation, exchanged ideas frankly and honestly, and expressed an expectation for cooperation in the future. After the discussions, the delegation viewed the offices and service facilities of the BAC accompanied by Mrs. Wang Hongsong, Secretary General, and Mr. Chen Cong, Director, of the BAC.
